The author collected these African tales when she lived in Tanzania as a child. She would listen to Mohamadi, Ramadhani or Karol, the story tellers, and dictate them to her mother the next day in her German tongue. The stories were recorded in longhand in four old diaries. When she went to England as an adult, she translated the stories into English with the hope that British children might enjoy them too, and in full circle, Tanzania children as well.
