Margie Greyvenstein
and Martin Steyn

Martin and I met when we were still in primary school.  We soon became friends and spent most weekends and holidays running around the back yard acting out stories.  At first we copied the characters and plots of our favourite shows and books but gradually we started to make up our own characters and worlds.

We remained friends all through high school but in 1994 Martin moved away to Pretoria while I remained in Cape Town and started my studies in Quantity Surveying.  But we kept in touch and in 2000 we started this book based on some of our favourite characters.

In 2001 I lost my job in South Africa and moved to the United Kingdom to work for a major contractor.  One of the first things I did was to find an internet café to keep in touch and working on the novel.  Various drafts followed over the years while I moved around the UK.

So this book has been travelling with me.  I guess it is no wonder that it has at its heart a great friendship, an ambitious character and a society torn apart by their differences (we grew up during Apartheid).

I live near Manchester working for a major contractor as a Quantity Surveyor.

Martin lived in Pretoria where he worked as a Software Programmer until his death in April 2010.

I regret that he never saw this book published but I am grateful for the very special bond we shared in creating it.

‘I am the one who lives in your dreams, the one who travels the ways of your heart, the one who rests in the lap of your thoughts, the one who rides the waves of your anger.  I am your weapon in the arena; I am your counter weight in the Balance; I am your alter ego, I am Shadow.’

In a world where each individual is balanced by an alter ego in the Great Balance, the Genetically Engineered are isolated under the Barrier by the Overseers and have no alter egos, creating the threat of an Imbalance that could destroy their world.

When Overseer William Hunter gives his alter ego free will for political gain, Shadow takes a second master.  Shadow destroys the Barrier, freeing the Engineered bringing the Overseers’ reign to a chaotic end and starting a racial conflict between the Naturals and Engineered.

Determined to re-erect the Barrier and restore order, Hunter finds himself opposing his wife who protects the Balance’s High Priest.  As a war rages between the Overseers, Hunter searches for Shadow’s second master.

Black Adder, the Master Assassin, meets Flash, a low level operative.  Flash’s kindness triggers the re-awakening of the Assassin’s Humanity and he discovers the identity of Shadow’s other master…
