UKUnpublished Vision
I have always admired the ability of Authors to write such engaging, convincing and sometimes very complicated storylines, and create characters that readers can develop feelings for, be they, for example, love, sympathy, empathy or even hate.
Traditional publishing can be very unfair on Authors. In fact, it would appear that an Author must be very lucky, or famous, to be able to get their work published. The list of reasons publishers can give is almost endless, for example, 'the book will not sell in large enough volumes to be commerically viable', 'we already have enough books of that genre', or 'we have taken our quota for this year'.
If your books is taken on by a publisher, I was amazed by the relatively low level of royalties paid to Authors. It is your hard work which is making the book sell in the first instance.
UKUnpublished hopes to be different.
The business model allows us to take books of even limited appeal, which may only sell in small volumes. Since all of our books are sold alongside thousands of other books, in well known shops and other popular sites, you don't need to worry about UKUnpublished being a small independent publisher, which doesn’t yet have a large number of readers visiting the site to purchase your books. All of our Authors’ books will be available to bookshops throughout the UK, so you have the opportunity of being sold in Waterstones, WHSmiths and hundreds of other bookshops around the country, and worldwide.
All of our Authors receive the best royalties that we can offer to reward their efforts, but also to encourage them to continue writing. The royalties are paid on a flat rate, so you do not have to sell hundreds of copies to begin receiving reasonable money per copy.
On the other hand, there is Self Publishing, which seems to be the ideal alternative to traditional publishing, but it has its own major pitfalls.
Firstly, the cost can be prohibitive. One company who appears to offer a similar service to that which UKUnpublished is offering, charges over £500, just to prepare the book for sale and make it available. There is also a higher fee than UKUnpublished to be paid annually to allow your books to remain available for sale.
In addition, if you would like to have a cover for your book professionally designed, this will cost £350.
Another large self publisher charges over £1,000 for a similar service to that offered here.
In many cases, Self Publishing requires a large number of copies to be purchased to ensure the cost per copy is reasonable, however this will require a large initial outlay, and storage when you receive them.
Again, UKUnpublished hopes to be different.
We do charge for setting up your book and making it available for sale, including the legal deposits required by British Law, but this is a one off fee. We also hope to be able to keep the cost of copies you want for yourself, or to sell, as low as possible. We do not require a minimum small number of copies to be purchased, so there is not a large outlay, or storage required when you receive them.
